Notice Basket Weaving participants!

Has anyone else finished there basket from the basket weaving workshop?  Please stop by the Library/Museum so that we can take a picture of your basket.  We like to take pictures of the workshops and what you made for our records.  Your cooperation would be very appreciated!

The Arvid E. Miller Memorial Library/Museum had a Basket Weaving Workshop on Feb. 20, March 13 & 14, 2007.  In attendance were eleven tribal and community members that wanted to learn how to make a basket from a black ash tree.  Jeff Pecore from the Forestry Department cut down a tree on the reservation for our workshop.  Jeff Hendricks from the Ho Chunk Nation showed us how to pound the tree and bring up the strips to use to make a basket.  Dorothy Decorah and Velma Lewis also from the Ho Chunk showed the group how to separate the strips to the right texture to make a basket. We then scraped off all the excess peelings of wood to make a smooth surface.  We were able to cut strips to make a rectangle basket or a round basket.  With the help of Dorothy and Velma most of the attendees to the workshop were able to learn the process of making a basket.  (Due to their traditions we were unable to get a picture of Dorothy and Velma).   Most of the attendees were able to finish a basket or get half way done with their basket.  Linda Larson, a Hannahville Potawatomi from Michigan has vowed to help anyone finish their basket.  An excellent time was had by all.
