The Large flowered Trillium, the most common and one of two species of trillium documented on the reservation. When the flower begins to die, they turn pink like this, and foresters say that signals the end of the fire season. Picking the flowers kills the entire plant, as the bulb in the ground will not be able to receive the necessary nutrients to sustain itself throughout the winter.
Many plants are called Indian paintbrush, but these are local and common names. This is the true Indian paint brush, as the botanists would say, and doesn’t grow in Wisconsin. This one was photographed in North Dakota. A purple variety grows in the arctic tundra.
These blooms almost look waxy and can be found in moist woods and on stream banks.
The Wild or False Lily of the Valley. Also called Canada mayflower. A common flower of the moist forests which forms large areas of ground cover.
The Red Elderberry with its brilliant red fruit is easy to spot from a distance. This is relatively common on the reservation.
The Jewelweed is a medical plant good for skin irritations, poison ivy, stinging nettle, and even sun burn
The Wild Columbine is a woodland plant, found on the Reservation.
The Yellow Ladies Slipper, a very rare orchid, found only once on the Reservation.
These mushrooms are common on the reservation and are considered poisonous. The Wood and the Blanding turtles are capable of eating poisonous kinds of mushrooms without harm, however, if a person then eats the turtle, they may get sick or even die from the mushroom poisoning. The Amanita muscaria is also know as the Fly Agaric, and is poisonous
The 1999 plant survey was a contract with St. Norbert College and the Tribe to do a comprehensive plant survey on the same areas of the on the reservation as the forest inventory survey. This gives us a complete picture of the habitat of the area, trees, shrubs and ground cover.
