Stockbridge-Menominee Black Bear Project
A study of the tribe’s resident black bear population began in 2004 as part of a U.S. Fish & Wildlife grant award which called for the development of a tribal bear, deer, trout and waterfowl management plan. Several key components have been identified for the black bear portion of this plan. Components include: (1) estimation of bear population and structure; (2) habitat use; (3) home range; (4) seasonal movement; and (5) development of rules and regulations.
To estimate the population size of mobile organisms, one commonly used method is the mark-recapture technique. This involves first capturing and marking a sample of organisms and then recapturing them and counting the number that have been marked.
By marking and recapturing individual black bears we will look at the percentage of the black bear population being harvested each year and determine the estimated size of the current resident black bear population.
