USFWS Partners Grant – Phase I

The Stockbridge-Munsee Community worked with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under a Partners Grant to narrow, deepen and add meanders to the Red River. The section of river is located north of Raash’s field along River Road.  Much of this section has filled with sediment and become warm as a result of past logging practices, making it unsuitable for brook trout.  The completed project is the single largest stream restoration project ever completed in the State of Wisconsin. This project was done to enhance the aquatic habitat for fish, particularly trout, and other aquatic organisms. The river channel was wide and had little permanent fish cover. Restoration efforts resulted in increased habitat diversity for fish and other aquatic organisms. In addition, new nesting islands were created to provide nesting habitat for wood turtles, a threatened species. Phase one of this two phase project was completed in 2006. Phase I - completed in 2006, narrowed deepened, and added structure along a 700 meter stretch of the river.  The following images show the project one year after construction.
