  • Our Mission Statement:
    The function of the Mohican News Department is to be a voice for the Mohican Nation and its people. It is the purpose of the paper to inform tribal members, wherever they are, as to the past, present, and future of the Community.
     

  • Mohican News Manager:
    The Mohican News Manager will be responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of the Mohican Newspaper. Responsibilities include the following:

    Responsible for publication of the tribal newspaper, including layout, printing, distribution, and all other media (including electronic media.)

    Shall obtain newspaper articles through a variety of methods including but not limited to, newswire, reporting, submittal, etc.

    Shall draft any communication policies and procedures revisions for Tribal Council approval. Work with Tribal Departments to promote a positive tribal image, receive and display departmental activity.

    Oversee the department budget and seek additional sources of funding such as advertisement fees and subscriptions.

    Will supervise, instruct and mentor newspaper staff.

    Will chair monthly Editorial Board meeting and consult with Editorial Board in accordance with policy.
     

  • Mohican News Department:

    The Mohican News Department is responsible for informing tribal members, as well as the greater community, of the past, present, and future events of the community.

    The Mohican News is printed twice a month with deadlines on the first and third Thursday of the month. The paper includes current events, holidays, department news, and information to help the reader know what is going on in the community. The Mohican News includes the Tribal Council directives from each Tribal Council meeting. Space for ads from various businesses and companies are also available. The Mohican News features a ‘Getting to know your Elders’ section, which is specifically for the community to get to know the elders. The Mohican News is always looking for elders to feature in that section.

    The Mohican News employs a Mohican News Manager, a Staff Writer/Reporter and a Receptionist. The Mohican News Manager (Editor) is responsible for the development, coordination and performance of the Mohican Newspaper. The editor is responsible for publication of the tribal newspaper, including layout, printing, distribution, and all other media (including electronic media.) The editor obtains newspaper articles through a variety of methods including but not limited to, newswire, reporting, submittal, etc. The editor works with Tribal Departments to promote the departmental tribal image, and receive and display departmental activity. The editor is also responsible to oversee the department budget and seek additional sources of funding such as advertisement fees and subscriptions.

    The Mohican Staff Writer/Reporter is responsible for reporting current events and other newsworthy events taking place during each news deadline cycle. The Reporter writes articles and takes pictures, which are then submitted to the editor for approval.

    The Mohican News Receptionist is responsible for assisting the Editor in the daily tasks and the completion and revision of the Newspaper. The receptionist is responsible for proofreading the paper once it is finished, ordering supplies, and setting up the Editorial Board Meetings.

    The Mohican News Editorial Board meets once a month. The editorial board consists of three tribal members and a Mohican News staff member. Their concern is the overall direction of the newspaper and issues of concern to the Community. The editor meets with the Editorial Board and has monthly meetings and consults with Editorial Board in accordance with policy.
